The Amazing Spider-Man "A Rockomic: From Beyond the Grave" (Buddah, KSS-117, 1972)

A fave from childhood, I ended up with my copy around 1976 through Publisher’s Clearing House (after it had been remaindered for about 98 cents) and felt very, you know, Rock & Fucking Roll as I sung the songs with my friends on the playground at school (one of them even calls Spider-Man a “sex machine” which seemed pretty noteworthy to our seven year old brains). Not to be confused with that all-music “Rock Reflections of a Super-Hero” thing that came out a few years later on Lifesongs, this is a mix of a storyline (involving the Kingpin, Dr. Strange, and a retelling of the Spider-Man origin) along with 4 original “Rock Songs” that sorta follow the standard Buddah house sound of the day (ranging from wah-wah pop rock to dopey ballads). I broke the whole thing into tracks as best I could, ’cause if you’re like me after a few listens you’ll probably want to skip “It’s Such A Groove To Be Free” before it bores it’s way into your skull. Oh and hey, for all you Archies fans: that’s the ubiquitous Ron Dante singing the songs (and busy actor Rene Auberjonois voicing Peter Parker/ Spider-Man.)

I found this at http://www.spiderzrule.com/spider9.htm – I’m not sure if it’s utter nonsense, but it’s pretty crazy!

Latest from the Courier Mail (24 June 2002):
Goat milk smooth as silk: As comic-book hero Spiderman fills cinemas with his adventures, prepare to meet an equally astonishing creation: Spidergoat.
Scientists have combined the DNA from a goat and spider to create an animal which produces silk five times stronger than steel. The fibre, from the goat’s milk, harnesses the huge strength, relative to their size, of silk from spiders.

The silk-milk fibre can be used to make body armour far tougher than normal bullet-proof vests made from Kevlar while weighing little more than a cotton shirt. The hybrid goats were created by inserting a gene from an orb-weaving spider into a goat embryo. The goats are outwardly normal, but carry the gene responsible for production of a spider silk protein. Each goat is 1/70,000th spider. Nexia, the Canadian biotech company which produced the goats, hopes the fibre – dubbed Biosteel – could take a large chunk of the $2.6 billion market in industrial fibres. It plans to produce ropes and nets, sporting goods and equipment, fishing lines and surgical stitches.

That is the nuttiest thing I’ve ever seen, but doing some background checks – it’s for real. They crossed the genes of a goat with a spider. I wonder what would happen if they ever did that with people… would our skin be as strong as steel? Who needs a kevlar jacket when you’re bare chest can do nicely?

Many thanks for posting this. I bought this record from a tiny comic shop in Norwich, UK when I was about 11 or something. Since then it has infected the minds of many a hapless traveller until becoming scratched beyond all recognition in the nihilistic teenage years.

Anonymous: I have no idea on value for this stuff, but perhaps you can look at the completed auction listings on ebay & get some info.

I found the record at a Salvation Army with the poster (the only reason I bought it! It’s weird alright, so at a Science Fiction Convention in Novi ,Michigan I had RENE autograph the poster which is the only place where he’s credited with being the voice of Spidey.I didn’t realize this until he showed it to one of his helpers who apparently didn’t believe he was on it and said to him “See I told you I was on it!”Imagine all those great Altman movies and I get him to autograph this!

MANY years ago I had this on 8-track tape. I bought it at Radio Shack. Can you believe it?

Listen to it on headphones…it’s a trip.

Wow! I remember listening to this when I was really little. I was born in ’69 so I was three when this came out. I remember episode 1 and 10 the most which makes sense. My short attention span had me tune out everything in between and the climax of the story was just to much to ignore. I must have played the intro a million times because I always remembered what Lizard, Goblin, and Vulture said. I got goose bumps hearing these clips again. Thanks so much for posting these tracks online and for the great memories.

I forgot to mention that I found this record in a vintage music shop back in 1989 when I was visiting Hawaii. I saw the record and made a mental note to pick it up to look at it but I must have been distracted with other things in the store. After I left the island I realized I never looked at it and till this day wondered if was ever gonna see or hear the record again.

Like many other nostalgic comic fans have written, this was a MAJOR influence on my hobby when I was a toddler. I was born in 1968 and remember my father coming home with this LP before it was even released (he was a jiggles artist in the music industry). I played this record over, and over, and over again, it was truly amazing to HEAR the comic LIVE and filled with action.

I’d been looking for years for a SEALED never opened copy, and JUST found one on the ‘Bay a few weeks back for a $75.00 BIN!!!

I have two other copies, but wanted a sealed copy, so that gives some fiscal perspective of its worth for those interested…cheers

Loved this album as a kid, loved the songs, for some reason I even loved the aforementioned “It’s Such a Groove To Be Free” (!)…The music really seemed to me (as a kid) to give that feeling of confidence that the scene was going for, I guess, about his feeling putting on the costume for the first time….
The only prob was that the song’s lyrics were singing about how it was great to take the mask OFF and NOT be Spider-Man for a change! !

I think I might have the album back at my parents. Does anyone know how much I could get for it? Seems like it might be worth a trip up into the loft.
