Voodoo Drums "Voodoo Drums In Hi-Fi" (Atlantic, 1296, 1958)

Perhaps more thematically spooky than aurally, this 1958 entry into the Hi-Fi genre has some cool on-location recordings of genuine Haitian Voodoo ceremonies, primarily as performed by “country group amateurs”. I’ve included a large scan of the (super informative) liner notes as well, and here’s a sample to get you started:

“Haiti may be a dark enigma to most of its visitors, but if one learns the language of the drums, the life and mind of its people open to you like a flower. The drums are never silent; day and night they sound from some vague distant place, muffled but distinctly articulated like a heart-beat. […] The drum rhythms — as well as the art of making drums — came from Africa. […] From Africa also came voudoun, which is a religious ceremonial and also a deeply ingrained attitude to life and the nature of things[…] Through the boungan (the voudoun priest), man converses with nature. Through him, man supplicates for protection against impending dangers, and through him, sometimes, man strikes at an enemy.”

Wow, your site is great! I’ve been drooling over the great list of Halloween Reggae/ Dub stuff being discussed on the Blood & Fire boards, and it looks like now I can hear at least a little more of it (along these lines I’ve mostly just been playing “Scientist Rids The World Of The Evil Curse Of The Vampires” & Lee Perry’s “The Vampire”, so I can clearly use some help…)

I can’t wait to hear this. I have a Voodoo display in my house of Horrors that needs a new soundtrack.

Hey Reggaex, I’m looking for the name of an album, hopfully you’ll post it.

I can’t remember what it’s called, but Dracula something or other and the cover looked like the BBC More Death and Horror LP cover?

Jason – thanks for the kind words, and for the plug! I’m glad that I’m able to share some of the reggae Halloween music and I’m even more elated when I hear someone is actually enjoying it! I’ve got about 21 tracks that I’m sharing on my blog this Halloween season, as of now I’ve got about 45 in my Itunes folder but time is limited and besides, I’ve got to save some for next year.

Dr. Terror – I think the album you’re looking for is a instrumental dub album called, “Scientist Rids The World Of The Evil Curse Of The Vampire.” It is an awesome album and the cover itself is fantastic. I could share it if you’d like to hear it!

    Fernando,
You want the Soundtrack, not the Pop songs. I only have the pop songs.

You can download the sound files from that site though.
