Peanuts "It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" (Charlie Brown Records, 2604, 1978)

Amazingly not available on CD (though throughout the ’70’s it was released on vinyl in a variety of formats; long playing 12″, book & record 7″, etc), this is the shortened-for-LP adaptation of the beloved Halloween special from 1966. Recently the subject of a “making of” book (and readily available on DVD), its return to the yearly Halloween television lineup was always welcome for me as a kid (well, aside from all of that “World War I Flying Ace” stuff which just made me impatient for the most part). Just like tons of kids I can remember liberally quoting the “I got a rock” line while Trick or Treating, and the less said about the time I tried to cut up one of my bedsheets in an attempt to emulate the ghost costumes worn by many of the characters the better.

Oh WOW!!! Cannot tell ya how much I absolutely love the Peanuts Halloween special! Love the Peanuts Christmas, as well…. I think I just identified with ol ‘Chuck’ as a youngster. Heck, even now, I stil suffer those occasional days where I “had a little trouble with the scissors”. Thanks.

Cool. I just got this on DVD. Maybe one day I’ll post the sound track from it like I did Fat Albert. Thanks.

Here’s a Halloween-esque request, obscure enough. How about Bro Smith’s “Bigfoot” 7 inch?I remember calling in and requesting it on AM radio in the days before FM came along,as a little kid. With the supersaturation of Squatch movies at the time,I believe it reached something like 57 on the national charts before disappearing FOREVER.The chorus went something like “Bigfoot’s comin’,gonna get ya,gonna get ya!Bigfoot’s comin so you better watch out!”I’d be totally amazed if somebody could pull this one out of the cobwebs!Grazie!

    Yours cruelly,
    B.W.

Jason, I’ve been following for awhile but haven’t registered. Now that it’s finally Halloween season, I just have to tell you this is wonderful, I appreciate it so much.

This Charlie Brown special reminded me of another TV Halloween special. Does anyone else remember “Disney’s Halloween Treat” narrated by a pumpkin? I found out it was released on VHS in 1984, but it’s not being sold anymore and it’s $100s on ebay. It’s definitely out of print. I was wondering if you might have a copy, or if you know of any other blogs/people/places that might.

Thank you so much, both for that and for all the wonderful stuff you’ve done so far.

Great addition. I used to have this LP years ago, but had to give it up for space. Thanks for the post.

Man, comments from Alice Bag AND Chris Cilla? I’m going to go ahead & call that “totally fucking cool”. In fact I’m going to play “Babylonian Gorgon” while reading “Hot Dog Holiday” in their collective honor. And that’s no joke!

big wop: man, I remember that song too, don’t have it laying around but I’ll see what I can scare up.

The one on YouTube has a magic mirror as a narrator, not the pumpkin. 🙁

Is there anyone who has the songs for this episode? I have been looking for these songs forever. Were the songs even available? I know the Great Pumpkin Waltz has always been available. But there has to be someone that has the music. No? Please!

Here is a web page which has a listing of all of the Vince Guaraldi songs from each of the Peanuts specials.

It shows which records or CDs the songs are available are on.

Unfortunately, there are quite a few songs which remain unavailable.

    Note to Big Wop:
I actually have a 45 of Bro Smith’s “Bigfoot” and I can digitize it to mp3 format (my turntable connects to my Mac via USB).
Yup, it brings back memories of the 70s and the scary camping trips I took with my friends. Is something in the woods watching us?! LOL.

I’m happy to say that I have the original version with the pumpkin, as well as the earlier 1977 special with Jonathan Winters. Both were taped off of the broadcast on TV. I am in the process of transferring from VHS to DVD and capturing pictures from both, and will feature them in my blog sometime in October.

I enjoy the Scar Stuff blog a great deal. Keep up the good work!
