D. Records "Halloween Sounds & Music for Your Parties, Trick or Treaters & School Festivals" (D. Records, SR8001, 1960’s)
Here’s a 1960’s Halloween sound effects album that came out of Texas on D Records, one of the many great labels spun from “Pappy” Daily’s Glad Music publishing company (though this particular record was produced by his son Don, or “Dlanod Yliad” as he’s credited on the back cover). While it’s a cool little time capsule on its own, Spook Show fans should take extra note here since it’s the opening track, “Haunting Melody: Screams, Creaky Ghost Voices, Spooky Sounds”, that’s memorably being played behind the Kara-Kum ad spiel (“You’ll see blood curdling sadistic surgery! Someone’s head will be cut off with a butcher knife and thrown to the audience! Don’t loose YOUR head! Do you believe that the out-of-space monster who died — yet alive, will come to seek the warm blood that he needs to keep himself alive? Don’t treat this lightly! How are YOU fixed for blood? The dead will return from graves! Ghosts and skeletons will fly above you, and some may sit by your side and plant cold damp kisses upon your cheek!”) found on Something Weird Video’s Monsters Crash the Pajama Party (Spook Show Spectacular) DVD. Lots of these stock spooky sounds will at least be somewhat familiar to you if you’ve done time with Halloween records (sometimes you can even hear the tape spool power up/ off as the reel is queued up or stopped), though the bonus here is that there’s generally a lot less cross fading and layering which allows you to, you know, really focus on those goblins laughing. The album definitely has a lot of original touches too, mostly in the music. The closer “Ghost Parade March” is actually a creepy version of “Mac the Knife” (or something with almost the same chord changes — help my poor brain out here while I make a pot of coffee), and though I’m guessing that the carnival melody heard at the end of “Ghost From Outer Space” is probably library, the haunting out of tune “Ghost Combo play Spook Music” must be an original number. Paul: I did a bunch of covers for Something Weird a while back (sadly the ones for the K Gordon Murray collection were put on ice when that whole legal weirdness went down), but haven’t done much lately since Lisa’s been making most of them in-house & they’ve also been mostly converting a lot of older vhs titles over to dvd-r & doing their on-demand thing. My day gig is graphic design though, and I’ve got a bunch of other freelance stuff out there (recently I’ve done junk for Estrus, Dirtnap, Empty records) that I really should make a website for someday. The SWV folks are really, really great people by the way. Just supercool.
Anyway, a few other old SWV covers I did are here & here, though the designer in me feels compelled to note that they’ve been a little reworked & simplified here & there.
Dave: Yeah, that site is also all me. It was my first stab at cataloging a lot of what I have, which then morphed into this blog.
Oh and hey, Paul — since you’re linking to them in your name I’ll mention here that some dude from Sleazegrinder (looks like it wasn’t you) gave a great review to my band’s first album (& pretty much the second one too).

Yeah, that was Sleazegrinder himself who covered the Knockout Pills (didn’t know that was you — great band). We cover a lot of music and cult movie stuff — feel free to browse the site, should you need to kill a few hours…
I remember those K Gordon Murray DVDs (and I got one of them — Doctor of Doom and Wrestling Women vs. the Aztec Mummy), and thought your cover art was great. Too bad they aren’t using you more — the new DVD-Rs, while great for the buyer/viewer, are a little dull in the visual dept. But regardless, Mike and Lisa are good people, as you said.

I made a post on one of those record request blogs about a certain LP, and I guess I struck the nerve of some record industry, nazi idiot. The jerk wad’s been making rude and obnoxious comments in regard to my post, and the jerk weed even sent me a vulgar email bashing my music sharing website and forum. Why don’t these asses go attack the record companies that have been ripping off their artists for more money than our little websites will ever cost them? Sorry for the rant, but such self-righteous bullcrap ticks me off.
I have no trouble buying an LP if I can find it for less than some of these jerks are selling it for online. $10.00 Dr. Terror? That’s nothing. I had a website owner want to charge me $35.00 for a CD copy of an LP.

As a noob to your site, I would like to thank-you for posting all this cool audio! I still have much of this stuff in my private collection, but since I no longer own a turntable, it’s great to hear this stuff after all these years. Especially the Troll Records series (I only had the first two), and the Wade Denning Pickwicks!
I wore out the grooves on “Sounds to Make You Shiver!” The album art on that one was so cool, wasn’t it? That LP went everywhere with me when I was 8. I also remember leaving it outside on our patio on one of the hottest days in the summer of ’76. It warped so bad it was unplayable. I was livid, ’cause I knew I’d probably never find it again at this time of year–much less ever.
But leave it to my mom, that hip, cool chick! She must have had a Shrinky-Dink flashback or something, ’cause she ended up preheating the oven to 200 and tossing it in for a minute on a pizza pan. Worked like a charm too, sounded a little different (a lot quieter), but still playable. I was extatic. Who’d of thunk it? Chalk it up to creative parenting, I guess.
By the way, how do I get in touch with you? I would really like to contribute! I have some stuff I know you don’t (judging by the listings on your scaryspookysounds site). Japanese and American re-issues on CD and more…
This site rocks. (And my kids love it too!) It’s great that we can pass a large chunk of this monster culture onto a new generation. My daughter loves this stuff just as much as I did.

Hi, love the stuff here… I have a copy of this LP (Halloween Sounds and Music…), and noticed that the first track which features Indian music with spooky noises overdubbed is in fact a shamelessly ripped off track from Beatle George Harrison’s 1968 “Wonderwall” album… The original tune was called “Microbes”. Wonder if Apple Corps ever found out?? Also, at one point during the record, there is a steal or “sample” from the Sea Hag album, I’m sure of it. I’d recognize that amazing cackle anywhere – yeahhsss!
Only now getting around to some old comments so forgive my tardiness — Mike you are absolutely right about the total “Wonderwall” / “Microbes” grift on “Ghost Combo (Play Spook Music)”! (Man, I really shoulda placed that but shamefully I guess I’ve played WW less than I have, say, “Electronic Sound”). Anyway, great catch — this also places this record’s birth date a couple of years later than I would’ve guessed.

The album plays pretty well for its age and still gives me the creeps. My dad would dres up as a witch (long story) and would play this record near the front door and scare the crap out of kids. Hey lucky for me my dad didnt shield me from the scares he would come in full dress when I was in the bathroom and scare me. Witches now terrify me and as for this record I will not leave it on the turntable for fear it will some how come on and play… I tell you it has a ot of power over me and for witches cackling it cannot be beat.
Is it just me or did everyone only get files for track 1,2, 5 & 8 on this download?
